Fanga-mörk - Fanga-merk is the monogram of the owner, which came from Iceland, presumably in the 14th century. Four band-runes connected by a salting cross with the name (initials) of a person can be considered a classic look.

There are simple ones, there are stylized ones: it is worth bearing in mind that the more difficult it is to understand the drawing, the stronger the magic, according to the Icelanders. For example, the same staves with the names of the gods are highly stylized band-runes, only single, and sometimes combined into a single whole, representing a full-fledged galdrastav.

Fanga-merki are very convenient and interesting if you take a certain word (luck, health, success, etc.) along with the name. At the output, we have a full-fledged talisman (amulet). It is applied to things like an amulet or embroidered on bags in which runes are stored (to give them special strength and set them up for the owner), embroidered on clothes, carved on a tree.

Galdrastavy isl. Galdrastafir - magical staff

Galdrastavs are magical rune signs that appeared in the early Middle Ages in Iceland. They are several, or many, intertwined runes, often highly stylized. At the moment, they are the least studied section of northern magic.

Like talismans, galdrastavs are made to achieve a specific result. Despite the fact that the original meaning of individual runes has been lost (we all use the meanings proposed by the authors in the 18-19 centuries), despite church prohibitions, galdrastavs, popular in the Middle Ages, have survived due to their stylization as decoration.

Galdrastavs are conditionally divided into Aegishjalms, Galdramündes, Bind-runes. Don't be intimidated by these complex names, in fact, everything is more than simple.

The Helm of Dread is also called Aegishjalms.

Egishjalmy (Isl. ‘gishjalmur) is one of the most common groups of galdrastavs. Translated from Icelandic means "Helmets of horror (reverence)".

Aegishjalms were created with the aim of instilling a panic horror so strong that they fell into a stupor for a while. Often this type of galdrastav is associated with snakes, since the poison of some snakes paralyzes the victim.

Aegishjalm is a cruciform equilateral sign that has certain divergences at the ends depending on the purpose. According to mythology, the possession of such a sign gives power over enemies and enhances magical power.

The literal Old Norse expression "to wear (on oneself) the Helm of Dread in front of someone" has the meaning of "to intimidate someone." In late Icelandic, the expression "to have the Helmet of Terror in the eyes" appeared, that is, to have the power of a look that inspires awe. The task of this symbol is to suppress the will of the enemy, in the event of an attack on the owner of the Helmet, the aggression emanating from the attacker is transformed by Egishjalm and directed at the aggressor, instilling fear in him.

Aegishjalm is drawn on an imaginary field representing different levels of reality, and each specific "helmet" is designed to act on specific levels.

It is believed that Aegishjalm surpasses all other symbols in the quality of the protection provided; many modern authors refer to it as the Cross of Invincibility.

The simplest Helm is formed from a four-pointed cross by replacing each ray with the Algiz rune (Madr rune according to Korablev); in the same way, from the eight-pointed cross (also known as the "heavenly star"), a twenty-four-pointed cross is obtained, also belonging to the group of Helmets.

This symbol was very common in medieval Europe, it adorned stone buildings and rustic wooden products, and was often used in church utensils. The content of both of these symbols is protective, or rather, protective magic. The pinnacle of the development of complex multi-pointed crosses was a common medieval magic symbol, known as Aegishjalm proper.

The helmet of horror was painted on the forehead before the battle to intimidate the enemy, hence its name. The power of the helmet of horror was associated with the snake's ability to paralyze its prey. It became a symbol of the serpentine power emanating from the magician's forehead. Today it is used as a talisman of protection by Asatru devotees.

The Völsunga Saga says that the scarecrow helmet is part of the treasure of the Nibelungs. The hero Sigurd returned this treasure to the gods and mankind by killing the monstrous serpent Fafnir.

Galdramündy isl. Galdramyndir magical drawings

Galdramunds are the only type of haldrastavs that, with a high degree of probability, have nothing to do with runes. Although these magical drawings are not directly related to runes, it is believed that they appeared in the process of strongly stylizing bind runes and combining them with other magical signs with ligatures and glyphs.

Haldramünde are often extremely difficult to perform, as they include not only a huge variety of signs, but also their most complex combinations, runescripts and false letters.

This type of galdrastav was used in Iceland and is preserved in Icelandic witchcraft books. Sometimes these signs are images of things and animals that had a magical meaning for the Icelanders.

Signs were used for various magical purposes. Some researchers do not consider galdramunds to be galdrastavs, however, based on Icelandic traditions, most experts refer to haldramunds with the term “stafus” (Isl. sign), like any other symbols.
